Term 1 Scale Reproduction

In term 1 we learned about scale reproduction.

Scale reproduction is when you take some pictures/photos and resize and mix it into one image.

To do scale reproduction you have to print some image in black and white
Then draw a grid over it
Get the paper that you want your final project to be on then draw a square of the size you want your image to be
Then calculate the ratio(you can simplify it if it is too hard)
Then draw the grid in the square that you drew
Then just draw the picture

So for this project we had to choose one Global Issue that we want to talk about and a painting with that topic. I chose to make my painting about Diseases. Diseases are a big problem in the human society and many peolpe are suffering from it because there are not enough medicines or it is an incurable disease. So in my painting I focus on the incurable disease more than the medicines.
This is my painting (drawing the image in the grid)[It may be hard to see]:

So I put drew the viruses on top of my image. I made it big because I wanted it to look like it is a big problem. I also wanted to make it look like the virus is invading the city.
Nest I drew some soldiers escaping from the virus. I am trying to show that humans can not counterattack the incurable disease.
Beside the escaping soldiers I drew a big soldier trying to shoot down the virus. This is to show that some people are trying to fight back to the incurable disease. In the picture its a guy shooting down the virus but in reality its scientists making new medicines.
The background is a city in the night. I made it the night because I thought that the viruses will look more scary in the night with a dark blue background. I have some buildings in my background to show that it is a city.
In reality diseases are not that much of a problem in cities but they are a big problem in rural areas. I made it the city because I wanted to warn people that the diseases can spread to the city too.

I was not able to express my theme very clearly because the virus that I painted does not look like a virus so the people can not get the main point. Viruses were hard to draw because of their texture shape. There were 2 kinds of virus I drew. 1 of them is the one that looks like a long watermelon and the other one looks like a spiky ball. The spiky ball was hard to draw because I had to paint in many different colors.

If I can do this project again then I will choose a easier photo/picture to draw and make the size of the picture in my work bigger because it is hard to paint when it is small and I will probably choose another topic because I do not want to draw viruses again. I think I would choose "Smoking" as my theme if I can do it again because I am making a animation of "Smoking" in IT class so it will be easier to research and to think of what I should draw.

My self portrait

This is my self portrait. I finished two cycle in the design cycle. I like my picture because I think that the flame and ice looks cool and the idea of representing me using metal was creative and good. I also like the “STAINLESS STEEL” on my finger because I a, always perfect (in my world) and I don't have any stain. I took that from my skating shoes. I am planning to changed my background because I thought that the keyboard does not match my theme. My theme is based on a song that I like which is from my favorite video game. The song is about a boy remembering the past through a video game.

I used metal to cover myself because metal gets hot and cold easily which is just like me because I get in to new hobbies easily but I get bored of it easily too I used the paintbrush tool, the dodge tool and the smudge tool to make flame and ice on the metal. I lined up almost all the things that I liked in the past and made it black and white because I thought that it will look more like a memory in the past if I use black and white. I used “Colorize” to make it black and white (I made the saturation 0). I put a picture that I drew of a person head spinning because that is what I like to do best right now so I used the RBG Noise filter to make it look like a zoomed in flat screen TV because I thought that the flat screen TV represents the Present and I used the smudge tool to make it look like a flame, like it is burning to make it relate to the metal. I decided not to use distortion in my seld portrait beacuse I thought that I dont have any place to use distortion. I thought of using distortion for the things that I liked in the past but if I use distortion than I thought that it will make it look like I don't remember it that much which is what I don't want.

I had my second draft done but I decided to change it because I thought that it is hard to get my theme from my second draft so I made changes to it to make the theme more obvious. I used the blend tool to make the background a shade of black and cian because other colors that I tried made it harder to see the picture. I made the shape of an "C" with "Rockman"s (name of character) to make the background more interesting and also to make it look like I have many memories of it. So I used the colorize tool to change the color because I thought that, that will make it look like I have many different memories of it. I also put the thing that I used to like in the edge because I think that, that will make it looks more like its not that important for me anymore.

"億千万" is the song that inspired me to make a self portrait about this theme.

This is a self portrait of Vincent Van Goh
"Self Portrait with Felt Hat Painting - Vincent Van Gogh." Art News Blog. Web. 21 Sept. 2010. <http://www.artnewsblog.com/famous-paintings/van-gogh-self-portrait/index.htm>.

This is a self portrait of Pierre Auguste Renoir
"Renoir." Baudelaire and the Impressionist Revolution. Web. 21 Sept. 2010. <http://impressionist1877.tripod.com/renoir.htm>.

What are self portraits?
Self portraits are a painting, photo, drawing or a sculpture of the artist by the artist. Most artists usually paint themselves in a closeup or an extreme closeup. Vincent Van Goh is famous for painting himself 37 times between 1886 and 1889. Frida Kahlo is also famous for her self portrait.

Why do you think artists make pictures of themselves?(generally, and specifically, use examples from history)
I think that artists make pictures of themselves because the artist knows him/herself the most and maybe some artists wanted to keep a picture of them.

How do I create a digital self-portrait?
You can take a picture of yourself and edit it on a computer if you want or you can just paint with a software.

What images are best for creating a self-portrait?(procedure for your task)
I think that close up pictures are best for creating a self portrait because it would be easier for the people to see the face and it will also be easier to edit it.

Do you think the artist used a mirror? If not how do you think they worked?
I think artists used a mirror because if not then they would not know what their face looks like so they can only do a “personal portrait” which is when the artists focus more on the psychological part rather than the parts of their faces.

What kind of person do you think the artist was. Is there anything in the picture that might help you find an answer?
I think that the person is frowning and he looks disturbed so maybe he was concentrating on something and someone disturbed him. There is something that looks like an aura around the person so maybe it could be brightness because the color that the artist used is bright.

What kind of mood do you think the artist was trying to create? How have they created that mood?
I think that the artists wanted to create a mood that is normal because I can't find anything special about the 2 paintings. From the color of the background I think that Vincent Van Goh is happy or bright and Pierre Auguste Renoir looks dark but maybe3 that was just the color that fits most in his painting and his face looks like it is looking at something close so maybe he just painted what he looks like without any psychological additions.

Have any artists used distortion?
I don't know but maybe there are artists who did it.

2 point perspective

In Grade 8 Term 1 we are learning about 2 point perspectives.
2 point perspective is used when you draw cubed objects like cubed houses.
In 2 point perspective the cubed shape vanish in 2 points.

To draw 2 point perspective you first have to make a horizon with 2 vanishing points.
Then you draw a horizontal line anywhere as long as the lines from the vanishing points can reach it.
Then you connect the two ends of the horizontal line with the 2 vanishing points.
After that you draw a line to make that line into a cubed shape with 2 point perspective.

This is an example of 2 point perspective. You can see that the buildings on the edge of the drawing becomes a dot and disappears.

We are supposed to use our names and make something that looks like a cube shaped object.
My plan for this assignment is to paint a Nintendo Wii, Nintendo Gamecube or Super Famicon.
Those are all cube shaped and I think that it should be easy because I know that shape and color of it.

I chose to do a Nintendo wii stand because I thought it is hard to make my name look like a Nintendo wii. If I do a wii stand than I dont have to try to make it look like something and I just have to draw it under the Nintendo wii.

First I planned the Nintendo wii stand to be black but I changed to gray because the original color of the stand is gray and I wanted the background to be black to make the Nintendo Wii stand out. I finished painting but my Nintendo wii stand's face did not have different tones so I had to paint over it again. I finished my painting. There is nothing much to explain about it because there is not much detail in it. I should have made the background more fancy than just plain black. I also could have drew something beside the Nintendo wii like a wii remote. I made the border blue because I thought that it would be boring with just black and white and the blue makes it look fresh. I made one mistake in with my 2 point perspective painting which is the "O". At the end of the O it should be able to see the top of the O but I forgot to paint it.

I learned that I should add more detail to make my painting better and fancier.
